Winter Break 2023-2024 Events at Ohio University Athens

Looking for something fun to do on campus during Winter Break? Don’t worry, just because classes are off doesn’t mean the campus is completely dead; there are a few activities and events that can serve as a great excuse to get out of the apartment and participate in OU life in a non-paper-writing way:

December 15: Let It Burn: Artists’ Books and the Lure of the Flame

Part exhibit part installation, this literary experience explores the themes of heat, shadow, light, and burning and artists’ books, where the book is an object. Hosted at the Rare Books Collection in Alden Library, this exhibit explores the creation and destruction of information – the eternal push-pull of artists creating and others seeking to ban, censor and destroy.

December 23: The Met: Live in HD: Catán’s FLORENCIA EN EL AMAZONAS

Held at The Ridges Auditorium, this screening of Mexican composer Catán’s 1996 opera follows a Brazilian opera star who returns to her homeland to search for her long-lost love, who one day disappeared into the jungle. Sung entirely in Spanish, this musical story is the first ever Spanish-language bought by a major US opera company, and the first opera ever written by a Mexican composer.

January 13: The East End Game Nights

Board games, video games and junky snacks? Yes, please! Meet new people and play games like you used to when you were a carefree kid. It’s a great way to make new connections and decompress just in time for the start of Spring Semester. Held every Saturday night at Jefferson Hall on the 1st floor.

January 17: Community Service Fair

Start the semester off right and head to Baker Theatre Lounge to meet local organizations and find opportunities to support our local communities by volunteering!
